Make the Most of Your Internship

To start on the right foot in one of the most important “internship” you will ever have, read these tips to excel in your internship.

  • An internship is a work-learning experience, you should periodically evaluate your experience to make sure your are getting from it what you expected. Meet regularly with your supervisor to discuss whether you are meeting your goals and their goals, get feedback on your performance, and to clarify assignments and tasks before heading in the wrong direction.
  • Be a dependable intern! Dependability can be demonstrated in many ways. For example, don’t forget to call if you’re sick or going to arrive late. This lets your supervisor know your job is important to you.
  • Plan to work hard and do more than is expected. Avoid “it’s not my job” thinking. Take the initiative and ask for additional assignments once you’ve completed yours.
  • Develop and utilize strong interpersonal communication skills, including both oral and written communication. Every job, including technical ones, will require some degree of personal interaction. Learn to listen carefully to be sure you fully understand instructions or requests. Demonstrate patience and sensitivity with others, avoiding public confrontations or complaining. Learn the art of tact when working on a team which includes being receptive to other’s input and knowing when to compromise. With written work, be sure you’ve proofread it carefully for content, spelling and grammar before submitting it.
  • Another aspect of good communication skills is developing relationships with your coworkers. Get to know and be known by others in your work environment…your professional growth depends on it. A friendly attitude can also help you tap into your organization’s “grapevine”. Of course, this relationship building doesn’t mean socializing the hours away at the expense of job duties.
  • Leave your internship with a good recommendation from your supervisor and stay in touch – networking is the heart of a good job search, especially if you decide that this is the career field that you want to enter after graduation.

Recommendation a KEY for your internship!!!

Getting an internship is not an easy job, for that you need some planning and alertness. A reference letter from your professors plays an important role in getting internships. Don’t think that a reference letter will give you the internship; it’s a blessing that depends up on your skills and your past work.

For getting a reference letter from your professors you should have extraordinary skills which make you different from others. You also need to showcase your past work to your professor so that he/she can refer you for the internship. Do not approach to a referrer who may give you a negative review. Make sure that your references are coming from someone with whom you have worked in the past and to whom you can trust.

Nearly 47 per cent graduates in India unemployable, says report

That graduation is the stepping stone to the employment market holds no good in present times with a latest report finding out that as many as 47 per cent graduates in India are not employable for any industry role. Their lack of English language knowledge and cognitive skills were identified as the major obstacles to their suitability in the job market.

This, again, underscores the urgent necessity of substantive intervention at school and college levels for improving basic skills of students as well as renewing the focus on imparting vocational training alongside theoretical learning.

The report, titled ‘Aspiring Minds’ National Employability Report’, is a national audit of employability of three-year Bachelor’s Degree graduates. The survey included 60,000 students from colleges across India, slated to graduate this year.

According to the report, the employability of graduates varies from as low as 2.2 per cent in roles such as corporate communications/ content development and 2.59 per cent in accounting to 15.88 per cent in sales-related jobs and 21.37 per cent for roles in the business process outsourcing (BPO/ITeS) sector. Most of the graduates (35.95 per cent) were found suitable for clerical/secretarial roles.

For an analyst’s role, close to 84 per cent graduates were found to lack the right levels in cognitive ability. Ninety per cent graduates did not have required proficiency in English communication.

Another area of concern is that many graduates from accounting and information technology backgrounds remain ‘invisible’ to potential recruiters since they do not belong to the top colleges usually preferred by companies. Forty-one per cent of graduates employable in accounting roles hail from colleges beyond the top 30 per cent colleges, whereas for the IT services sector this percentage is 36 per cent.

This system, apart from creating economic inefficiency, also breeds unfairness for the students. An effective means to tackle it, the report says, is to employ a scalable certification to ‘discover’ the employability of students across the nation.

Resume VS C.V

There is always a delusion among students regarding Resume and Curriculum vitae. They have several questions in their mind, what is the difference between a Resume and C.V, what is included and what each is used for?

This article will straighten out the differences between the two application documents..

RESUME

A resume is an application document which is concise and brief. A resume is typically not longer than two pages. A resume demonstrates that you have enough prior experience and skills for the position you are seeking. A resume focuses on representing your experiences such as job, extracurricular and the skills you have gathered from these.

An applicant can change resume from one job application to another; he/she can customize the application document according to the specified post.

C.V

Curricular vitae are detailed synopsis of your life. A c.v can laid out over two or more pages and focuses on demonstrating your academic achievements, publications, research, awards, honors and affiliation; it is more than just a career biography. Its goal is to present your full academic history.

An applicant cannot customize a curricular vitae, it is static and does not changes for the position.
